A high-density polyethylene compound represents the benchmark material for the manufacture of high-pressure plastic pipe systems. Characterized by a minimum required strength of ten megapascals after fifty years of continuous operation at twenty degrees Celsius, PE100 pipe resin resists slow crack growth and rapid crack propagation. This material allows for thinner pipe walls and higher operating pressures compared to older polyethylene grades.
It is primarily used in water and natural gas distribution networks.
Mechanical Strength
Long-term hydrostatic strength limits signify that the material meets international piping standards. This strength allows pipes extruded from the resin to withstand high internal pressures without bursting. Consequently, utility companies can operate gas lines safely.
Crack Resistance
Decades of operation require the resin to prevent the initiation and growth of cracks. In the field, pipes are subjected to localized stresses from stones or soil movement. This material is designed to prevent these stresses from causing slow crack growth, which is the primary failure mechanism of buried plastic pipes, ensuring the network survives for over half a century.
Extrusion Performance
Processing the resin requires specific extruder configurations to handle its high molecular weight and melt viscosity. During the extrusion process, the melt must be handled carefully to prevent degradation and to ensure a smooth surface finish. Proper temperature control in the barrel prevents melt fracture and maintains the dimensional stability of the pipe walls.
